In the year 1922, after a long and bloody civil war, the Soviet Union was officially formed. After World War II, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, USSR, established itself as one of the world’s superpowers, opposite of the United States of America. The Communist regime reigned over the Soviet Union until 1990, shortly before the Soviet Union collapsed and was formally dissolved in December of 1991. However, during that reign, many rules and regulations were imposed on all aspects of life, including music. Many musicians were denounced because their music did not conform to the Soviet regulations. Some fled the country. Others stayed to fight for the right to compose freely. As a result, in 1928, collective farms were established all over the country, in an attempt to increase food supply for urban communities and raw materials. However, famine once again ravaged the state, causing the deaths of millions. Starting in 1936 and continuing until 1938, Stalin orchestrated a series of campaigns of political repression and persecution, sentencing over a million people to forced labor camps, known as Gulags, or to be executed. This became known as The Great Purge, or The Great Terror. Stalin revealed the new Soviet Constitution in 1936. In 1939, the Treaty of Non-Aggression between Germany and the Soviet Union was signed in Moscow. The secret details of this non-aggression pact divided eastern Europe in to German and Soviet spheres of influence. As a result, on September 1st and 17th, Poland was invaded by Germany and the Soviet Union. The Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were annexed by the USSR. Finland, which according to the pact fell in the Soviet sphere of influence, resisted diplomatic tries to move back it’s border, thus resulting in the Winter War, in which the Finns ceded portions of Karelia to the Soviet Union. The Red Convertible The short story â€Å"The Red Convertible† by Louise Erdrich is a story the author uses to shed light on the effects of mental illness on Vietnam era returning combat veterans. The story includes the effects not just on the veterans, also on their family and community. The acceptance and treatment of mental illness in veterans takes on new meaning with the recent increase in veterans returning from extended periods of service suffering from the disease of mental illness. The treatment for mental illness in earlier times such as lobotomies and electroshock therapy caused more harm than good, the medical profession lacked the knowledge and resources at the time to understand the disease. Advancements in diagnosis, research, and treatments are help ing reduce the number of mental health related deaths among veterans. The following heading of an article from Military Times states â€Å"New VA study finds 20 veterans commit suicide each day.† (Military Times), reveals more is needed to be done. Veterans are given many non-clinical options for treatment such as service animals, group hunting and fishing trips to name a few. Veterans returning from Vietnam like Henry have access to very little in the form of treatment. Layman and other family members are additionally confused as to helping Henry contend with his illness. Current treatments that incorporate family in the treatment program are encouraged by mental health professionals. Veterans suffering from mental illness have a better chance of maintaining a sense of dignity and stability, when family members and community are involved wit h the healing processes. My Jewish Community Essay From the time I was two years old, Id lived in the White Oak neighborhood in Silver Springs, Maryland. At first glance my neighborhood seems like a typical suburban, upper middle class town. What makes life unique here is that it is a homogenous community comprised of religious Jews. Orthodox Jews tend to adhere to a religious law stricter than other Jewish sects. These laws bar writing and electricity use on the Sabbath and impose restrictions on diet and dress. Since the majority of White Oak’s residents hold these beliefs, they transcend the boundaries of the home and are visible throughout the community. Women dress modestly in skirts and long sleeve shirts and men wear head coverings. Beyond these visual signs, the majority of the town’s children-myself included-attend private parochial schools. By living in White Oak, Maryland I feel more connected to my Jewish heritage that I otherwise would not feel if I lived in a smaller Jewish neighborhood. The everyday clothing worn by orthodox Jews is distinctive and brings me back to visions of pictures of my great grandmother and the way she would dress. Women cover their hair with either hats or wigs, wear loose fitting skirts that fall past their knees, and shirts that are loose and cover their collar bone and wrists. This is done in the effort to make sure they do not appear desirable to anyone other than their own spouses. For the women and children who don’t have spouses, they too dress in this fashion in preparation for a hopeful future with a spouse of their own. They will also wear colors that will prevent them from attracting attention or appear flashy. Orthodox Jewish men will regularly wear a covering on their head, which is called a kippa, a white long sleeve button down shirt, and a dark color pair of pants. They too try to avoid being noticed. This self imposed dress code is important in the community because it ensures that one will be able to identify one another when outside of any Jewish community. Due to the fact that orthodox Jews adhere to dietary restrictions, they are prohibited from eating in chain restaurants. To ensure that the dietary restrictions are abided by, special restaurants have been created for the Jewish community. Along with these restaurants, orthodox Jews have also opened supermarkets that sell only kosher items. This is necessary to Jews everyday life because the regular supermarkets do not have a large enough selection of kosher ingredients to feed their families. It has always been a treat to walk through my neighborhood passed the kosher supermarket and smell the wonderful aroma of all the different kosher foods that are being made. The aroma from the supermarket is very similar to the way my grandmother’s kitchen smells when she is cooking for the Sabbath or a Jewish holiday. Her matza ball soup and potato kugel I could smell from a mile away! Luckily I only have to walk up the street to get some home made matza ball soup or her yummy kugel. While visiting my grandmother one day, she told me that she and her family would travel a great distance for the opportunity to buy kosher food, which made me realize how fortunate I am to have these conveniences right around the corner from my home. Orthodox Jew’s day-to-day lives revolves around the observance of Jewish holidays and the Sabbath. They send their kids to parochial schools to ensure they will be knowledgable in regard to these religious observances. In addition, sending their children to parochial schools will enable the children to have time off and be home for the Jewish holidays that they will spend with their families. The main causes are absence of prayer, the many pressuresof school, lack of dress code, and insufficient numbers of caring teachers,faculty, and students. When I say lack of prayer in the schools,I dont mean lets make everyone one religion and every morning at schoolwe can pray in that one religion. Instead there should be a moment of silence. Not to take up time but to let everyone have a moment to pray to whomeveror however they wish. For the kid whos grandpa died and has to go to schoolbecause they need their two points for this six weeks. And the ones whowish not to pray can take that moment to just think. Lord knows we as highschool students dont have much time to just stop and think. There are many pressures in the publicschools. All of a sudden in high school everything changes. Everyone takesthat first merger into the real world. As a junior there is much morepressure put on the students. One minute a sophomore thinking Yeah Imgoing to college. While the next as a junior thinking How on earth amI going to get to college. Now that we are juniors we are suppose to begrown up. Everything from Where am I getting my gas money? to Wheream I going to college? is going through our minds all of the time, andyet some how we are supposed to come out calm and prosperous. All of thispressure and many of young adults do not get a chance to let it out. Itis like tossing a human body in to outer space with no protection. Itsa vacuum that just tears it apart piece by piece. Could this have beenwhat caused the Columbine shooting? Perhaps there was so much pressureput on those two boys to be in the in crowd that one day they just couldnttake it anymore. A small element in all of this is the dresscode. How sad is this? There is a shooting at least every year in a school,and administrators and teachers are worried about whether our shorts aretoo short. The office complains of girls wearing shorts that are too shortwhen there are rather larger girls running around with an extra layer ofskin. Perhaps we should have uniforms. Would that really solve the problemthough? Kids would still get theirs clothes too tight or too baggy. Theschools would still have as much segregation as there is in the schoolstoday. People do not only judge by how we dress but also by what we livein, where our house is located, what we have, and who we are related to. No one can change any of these things. Maybe uniforms will make a differenceand maybe they wont?Another factor in all of this is the faculty,parents, and students attitudes. Most of the faculty either just do notcare, or they are afraid to say something in fear of loosing their jobs. The guidance counselors are another part of this. When students go in totalk to the guidance, they are always eating and they say come back later. When you come back, they are still eating. When arent they eating? Thenwe actually catch them not eating, go in to tell them our problems, andthey end up telling us theirs; then nothing gets done about the studentsproblems. Where are the students suppose to go? We go to a teacher; theytell us that is what the guidance is for. We go to the guidance, and theyare eating. We go home and our parents are at work. So here we are allno where to turn so we are forced to bottle it up inside. When we do catchthe counselors and tell them our problems supposedly in all secrecy thewhole school and half the town ends up knowing. What were we better offdoing?
